Company History
The company traces it's roots to several firms of International Merchants trading in Birmingham, England
after the Second World War.
The New Zealand Test Cricketer, C S "Stewie" Dempster formed C S Dempster & Co as a supplier to New Zealand
Distributors Ltd. Oscar Hogg joined the partnership after a successful career with Keep Brothers, another
Birmingham Export agency, which had traded since 1820. When Dempster returned to New Zealand in 1946, Hogg
was persuaded to continue supplies to New Zealand. He formed "Newhall Agency" named after the office address
at 45 Newhall Street, Birmingham, which he ran as a Sole Trader until his death in 1958. The business then
became a Limited Company, and the first directors were Don Arthurs and Oscar Hogg's Brother in law Stan
Wildman. The Company moved to 21 Bennetts Hill in 1962, and Stan resigned in 1966.
Don expanded the business to include a range of commodities and equipment including engineering equipment,
agricultural implements, printing equipment and diesel generators.
The business bought Colag, a Dutch firm of importers and exporters in 1973. Colag had been trading with
Newhall Agency Co. Ltd. for several years until it's owner retired. In 2003, the Company moved to
111 New Street, Birmingham, and then on to Rock Hill, Inkberrow in 2005. In 2006 Don was considering
retirement after some 62 years in the export business. He successfully sold the business to Fred Kinchin
in June 2006, although he is still actively involved.
